Have you always wanted to pen a short story or write about an experience you have had? 

The Telegraph is launching a writing competition inviting its younger readers – aged 13-18 – to submit a 500-word piece of fiction or non-fiction, a short story, or poem. The theme of the competition is Lockdown. Please feel free to interpret that theme as creatively as you like. 

Whether you’re only starting your writing journey, or you’ve already honed and established your skills, this competition is open to young writers of all abilities. 

The winner will be selected by three of the Telegraph’s finest columnists, Bryony Gordon, Sophia Money-Coutts and Charlie Higson.

What can I write?

Your submission must be 500 words or less. It can be fiction or non-fiction, a letter to yourself, a poem or a short story reflecting on how you have coped over the course of three lockdowns – challenges, victories, support, journeys. 

Who can enter?

Anyone aged between 13-18. If you are under the age of 16, permission from a parent or guardian is required to enter. Please ensure that within your email submission a parent or guardian has written their formal consent.

How do I enter?

Email your entry to [email protected] Please also include your name, age, contact number and location.  

The prize

You’ll see your story come to life thanks to The Telegraph’s visual storytelling team. Not only will your story be published in The Telegraph in print and online, but the winning entry will be animated and turned into a dedicated Snapchat edition, which will also appear on the Telegraph’s Instagram account. We’ll be sure to tag you so you can share with your friends and family. 

Closing date for submission

The competition will close at midnight on February 22 and winners will be announced on March 8. Entries received after the closing date will not be considered.
